How to scale an existing Design System?

Challenge.

The BMW / MINI design system was in a very early stage of development. While the design tokens and foundational components were already defined, advanced UI elements for complex user interactions, online checkout processes, and e-commerce features were completely missing.

Approach: Additional components as a blueprint.

Since the Online Customer Portal was the first area to require complex interactions, new components were designed as a blueprint and integrated into the global design system to make them available across all areas and workstreams.

Process: Developing modular UI elements

The spectrum ranged from step navigation for processes to versatile card components in diverse states (e.g. for wishlist and vehicle overviews).

My Role.

  • UX Review: Identifying gaps and missing components within the existing system.
  • Component Design: Conception and creation of the new UI elements as a blueprint.
  • UI Finalization: Specifying the final UI states and ensuring a seamless developer handover.
  • Documentation: Creating accompanying specifications for the design system library.
